Spackle vs. Popcorn

A few years ago we had a leak in the roof where the sunlight was.  Well, it had already appeared that the previous owners had this problem before because we found poor, half-done fixes in the attic around the wood.  So we closed it up and my dad helped us get the ceiling patched.

This AM I wanted to try a comparison - Simple spackle vs. popcorn from a can.
I bought 3 different cans of popcorn to cover this small area with - each one failed to exit the container and just made a mess.  So today, I went to Walmart to pick up yet one last can before I buy a bucket of this stuff.  I asked the man tending to the hardware section about the fruitless effort to use canned product over another method, and was told that the canisters jam easily.  His further advice was to soak the tip in hot water after the initial shake-up, then use a pin to clear the debris surrounding the nozzle.

So I spackled half of the area (since I can scrape that off pretty easily) and then covered the kitchen up to faithlessly attempt a final spray from the can.

Spackled area

On the left is some quick spackle - on the right the popcorn, successfully applied.

Four cans it took - four, before we figured out the trick!  At least I got it working.  Now to just scrape off the mud and apply the rest of the popcorn.  Thanks Walmart man!

Indian Drywall Techniques

I am so tired of patching holes in the wall; I have become a professional at it.  The kids randomly knock holes in the walls all too often.
I was walking through Dana's room the other day and noticed a hole behind her door where the knob has punctured the drywall.  It appears that the door-stop had probably been stepped on during a game of hide-and-seek or something, and then bent so much that it broke out of the wooden baseboard.
Upon patching that I noticed another spot that was soft - in the drywall!  The previous owners had again improperly fixed something.  This is probably the 15th time I have seen this.
What they were doing was filling holes in the wall with plastic, cotton, Styrofoam  or garbage, and then taping it shut.  Then they would paint over it!  With the same amount of work, they could have just done it right the first time.

Look close - you can see the taped up spot

The back side, bearing the tape-job

There was also garbage in this hole

I cut it out, fished out some drywall, and patched the hole.  With some mud and elbow grease this was probably even easier than stuffing the hole and trying to tape it all shut.  I'm so tired of finding stuff like this.

Killer Carpet

We were at Ollie's the other day, perusing the kids books, and decided to wander a bit before leaving.  While passing the carpeting section, Dana noticed a sign, and told us we can't go that way.  I quickly responded and assured her customers could indeed browse the carpet sections.  She insisted that no one can go that way; it is dangerous.
After a few minutes and a bit of frustration I confronted her about her stern attitude and resistance to proceeding.  She finally said that there was a sign indicating that no one should enter the carpeting isles and pointed up at the above picture.
Dana then asked us what was wrong with the carpet and why it would kill us!

She does have a point.  I mean, come on Ollie's, why is the dead guy on the picture?

Disney on Ice

Our marketing guy at work has some neat hookups.  I had an email a few months ago about Disney on ice coming to town, and asked him if he could get tickets.
So over the course of the next couple months - about once a month - I would ask if he was able to get them.  And finally he came through.  I got some for the Rogers too, and it coincided almost exactly with Emily's birthday, so it quickly became a sort of gift.  Cool.
After cake and presents yesterday, we all piled into the cars and headed over to the Civic Center.  At 7:30PM.

Alex was happy -- Cars!

Army men from Toy Story

Th whole last half was all Toy Story.  It was really cool.  But on a school night, I really don't like the kids getting home after 10PM!

The eyes of a 5 year old...

Dana gave us this dollar to go to her concert. We asked why the dollar looks sad. She replied that dollars always look that way.
I can honestly say that is something I have never noticed..
