A New House, A New Garden

Way back when Dana was 2 or 3, we germinated some seeds in cups and a makeshift garden box.  Ever since we have just planted seeds about this time of year and let them grow.

However, this year we figured, since we are in a new house and need a new garden, Alex could assist in cultivating something from scratch, too.  We went out this morning and bought some treated wood, soil, and put together a gardening box.
Once the box was built, it was filled with dirt, separaters were put in, measured holes dropped in, and Dana colored some old wood shims with colorful annotations.  Then we sank them into the dirt accordingly.

Alex did the honors.

Once finished and covered up, we left the box in the laundry room to sit while we wait for the seeds to sprout.

We have made signs before:

This year, no one wanted to make any

And we have grown some neat stuff, including pumpkins, in years past:

Our old garden looked good the first couple of years, but as time went on, we just kind of let it go:

It appears that the previous owners of this house had a garden at one point - or something like one.  There were even grape tomato plants - and grapes!  But since no one had taken proper care of it, everything was pretty much dead and overgrown.  So we ripped it all out.

Once it was cleansed, all of the compost we had saved from the old house (which resembled dirt at this point) went into the garden to fill in where the stones and plants had been removed.

We have high hopes this time.  Its something fun to do with the kids, having them see what they put work into come to fruition.
